The grub prompt means grub is working, but there is some other defect in
configuration, such as missing or defective initrd or kernel or
/boot/grub/menu.lst. Read through
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html#Troubleshooting and
try to boot using the grub prompt to manually select a root, kernel and
initrd, which should tell you if the kernel & initrd exist and/or are
usable.
