I had similar problems when I started fiddling with the DMA setting in YAST. With DMA mode set to a simple 'on' I have no problems, however, if I pick a specific mode, even one well below the fastest mode supported by the drives, I start having major stability problems.
Both YAST and hdparm report the disks using their top supported mode with a simple DMA 'on' setting.
