Kio slaves are good but they don't work for non-kde apps. Do you know if
freedesktop will do something about it?
I use PowerISO to do essentially the same task without needing a kio slave

You can use it to open and copy the data out of isos. Works for what
it's intended to do. It's not integrated into any file manager or
anything useful like that... but it does the job.
