Ysgrifennodd Tony Alfrey:
<snip />
What is the configuration of your box? You're our first entry in our
Linux_Standard_Hardware_Base.Complete_System!! I see many posts on
this list of others who did not find that the install of SuSE 10.2
went as smoothly. Indeed, some say "10.0 installed great, 10.2 blew
up." Try your system with 10.2. We need
Linux_Standard_Hardware_Base.Complete_System.SuSE10point2
It's a Compaq AMD 64 dual core with and ATI something-or-other graphics
card and IXP SB400 sournd card. Brother HL something-or-other printer.
D-Link router. Samsung 17" LCD monitor.
<snip />
But if the goal is to convert more away from M$, it would help the
average user for the end result to be more Mac-like. Hence the
possible usefulness of such a compatibility list. I'm not the first
to propose ways to make the transition to Linux easier for the masses,
I'm just thinking about ways to quantify it.
All that would do would be to make Linux systems as expensive as Apple
systems. The two things are in different markets. Making Linux boxes
expensive will not increase market penetration. And anyway, who's going
to sell these guaranteed-linux-compatible systems? Not PC World, and
that's where Joe public goes to get his PC. In case you missed it,
Walmart have been trying something like this. I haven't heard them
shouting about its success.
For example: there's this new $150 dollar linux laptop for Africa
that's being proposed/funded/debated. Here's a
Standardized_Configuration that could serve as a Mac-like Linux
equivalent. Surely any software upgrades for this box must be
infinitely user-friendly, crash-proof and deliverable over the web.
Just like a Mac.
And it's for a restricted purpose. Education. If I wanted one for use
as a general purpose box, I'd have to reinstall the OS and hey presto!
we're back to all the same problems.
The problem is endemic. It can't be satisfactorily solved - at least
until substantial sellers of general purpose PeeCees start installing
Linux as standard. This is not going to happen any day soon.
I think we're in agreement, but you should still include me on the
beer list.
Done
