That's different from not having the device node. And I don't use the 
automount feature, I mount my DVDs manually, old style.

About the automount usability of 10.1, you should first check if 10.2 is 
better in that respect.

You may try leaving a terminal or another program using the dvd, and the 
drive will probably not dissapear.
