The trick was installing libxine1.  When I did that, it automatically
trashed lib-xine.  So, I guess lib-xine was, in essence, a crippled version
of libxine1 which came with the distro and needed to be completely replaced
by the libxine1 package from packman.  DVDs playing beautifully now.  Thanks
for all of the help.
