ok, on my initial kde installation, the kernel boot line had vga=0x345 and I could not get past the preinitdal error. But, when I did the reinstall with gnome instead, it set up a kernel boot with vga=0x314 and now I have fglrx working. Do you suppose it's only certain vga that are a problem? I also wish google had popped up that bug report when I did the search.
