then how does your mail get from your computer to your ISP.  I believe
that you said you were using "local" mail via Kontact/KMail,
 "I'm using Kontact/Kmail to collect mail from two external ISPs, no
  problem."

If you are not using sendmail or some other smtp, how are you sending
mail?


The mails you are loosing, do they appear in kmail or just go to
oblivion?

Send a test mail to root and see what happens in /var/spool/mail

do you have ~/Mail or ~/mail
