Daniel, thanks.

I ended up resolving it by installing the SUSE-proper 5.0 version of Netbeans 
and "downgrading" to .7 of the JRE.

That got NB 5.0 working.

I then downloaded the bundled JDK 6 / Netbeans 5.5 and installed it as local 
user. That works fine, too.

Now, why won't it work on my TRS-80?
