Thanks a lot for your suggestions!
My OS is SUSE 10.0, not 9. I opened the yast for the graphics card, and
found the "Activate 3D acceleration" is marked but grey and un-changeable.
Then I typed the command as you suggested:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> xdpyinfo | egrep GLX
GLX
SGI-GLX
I also can run 3D game like TuxRacer smoothly, which was very slow before
I installed the ATI driver.
Do all the information above indicate the OpenGL X-extension is loaded on
my machine? Any other suggesions?

Just because the RPM is there doesn't mean it's configured..... I don;t
have sles9, but go
through yast and bring up the graphics card and make sure "Activate 3D
Acceleration"
is on.... Also another way to verify is like so:
xdpyinfo | egrep GLX
GLX
SGI-GLX
You should see GLX....
