Well, John, what you say is interesting, I had to rewrite part of my /etc/sudoers file . Several lines of comments and two important lines had disappeared, I cannot understand how. My laptop with a stock install of 10.2 without any upgrade had not this problem and I copied its sudoers file on my other machine and now everything works fine with the root password, as on your systems. In fact your sudoers file must cantain something like that Defaults targetpw ALL All=(ALL) ALL root.
