This is x86-64.

So, do you have a real x86-64 perl? on openSUSE 10.2, I have:
rpm -ql perl |grep libperl.so
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/CORE/libperl.so

file /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/CORE/libperl.so
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/CORE/libperl.so: ELF 64-bit LSB
shared object, AMD x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), stripped
