I managed to get further. When I manually execute "s2ram -f" the
laptop goes to sleep, but display backlight is off upon resume. This
is not a big problem, as I can use Fn+BrightnessUp key to enable the
backlight. So, the question is how can I execute the same command
("s2ram") when clicking on "Suspend to RAM" from powersave tray icon?

It seems that powersave also correctly detects if an AC adapter is
removed/connected, and decreases/increases screen brightness. Now, if
I could somehow execute the same command (that is, increase screen
brightness) upon resume from s2ram...

look at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=179702
maybe you find a solution there.
at least you will find a new kernel to test.....

No, I'm fairly certain that this has nothing to do with "bad state"
problem. I compiled psmouse as module, and the "bad state problem" is
gone. (I also tested the kernel from
ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/i386/HEAD/kernel-default.i586.rpm
from 179702 bugfix, and it _did not_ help with "bad state".)

Best regards,
John
