I agree with Eberhard on Xfce!  I always had it installed as a backup to 
KDE rather than use Gnome.  It's quite configurable and very fast.  KDE 
programs run fine in it and as far as I can tell you don't lose any 
functionality using it.  If you are looking for something leaner, 
faster and stable, then I agree, give it a try!
