Seems to be the same status on most/all distros (Kmail i OpenBSD and Mandriva 
2007)... Seems to be a KDE/Kmail problem.

For me (OpenSUSE 10.2 on the desktop now...) it is however very rare to see 
this (but it has happended). But I have the Cyrus notify daemon that will 
tell Kmail that new mails have arrived. Don't know if Courier has one. If 
so... Try to enable it. Maybe this is the factor that makes this issue very 
rare for me.
