The way I saw it was to save off the email and then use vi to find it.
I see the same symptoms but fortunately my screen is big enough that the header is visible :) Thunderbird does take space from the message list area to expand the message/header display area, but there are more headers that I can't see and there's no scroll bar or other way to scroll that I can find.
