Which Desktop system are you using, and which word processor?
Since this isn't Windows there are several possibilities.

If KDE:

K button (start)
  Configure desktop (Personal settings)
      Regional and Accessibility
        Keyboard layout
         Xkb tab
            Check Enable Xkb options
                scroll down in the Options list to "Compose Key Position"
                     Check a key you don't use for anything else like maybe
                      the right window key.
                      Click Apply.

With that setting, you can hold down right window key and press oo
and when you let up the compose key you get °
Same for other key combos: hold compose, press two other keys
12 = ½
14= ¼
ae = æ
c / = ¢
ss = ß
Etc.  Experiment.
