In that case, you should consider two classes of patches, those
that can generally be safely applied on the fly, and those that can not.
Kernels should never be delivered via the automated patch service
in SLES.  

The only time I've ever had a problem with SLES was after a kernel
patch was delivered by automated patch service, and all sorts of
stuff started to fail.

I no longer use the fully automated mode on servers.
