I can confirm with SeaMonkey 1.1 and can confirm the same problem with Firefox 2.0.0.1 from mozilla.com which means it's no problem with using the system png libs. So what I'd recommend is to file a bug at bugzilla.mozilla.org for platform Linux and your description and testcase.
