[opensuse] how to read .gif files

Hello all--

I got an interesting message with a lot of photos, most in .jpg format, and 
had no trouble reading them with gwenview, which came up automagically, but 
there was one .gif, and it didn't open.  What do I need to read .gif files?  
(SuSE 9.3)
