I seem to recall there being some argument for this a while back. The 
pre-loaded machines actually cost the clone manufacturers less, simply 
because all the drivers are pre-loaded on some sort of image, whereas they 
need to spend more labor hours on these machines.

I'm not sure how valid it is with the PC clone manufactures such as Dell or HP 
these days, though.

All the same, those prices are not unreasonable.   I'm still happy with the 
Monarch Systems I bought for my mom and a few friends. They were very 
SUSE-friendly.
