It loads the kernel and initrd. The point being that the kernel panics on loading bash, and this only happens in the initrd. I can see no other place for it to panic just because bash won't run. Which is why I'm thinking maybe it isn't loading properly. Note also that 10.1 and 10.2 doesn't install the boot loader to the master boot record by default. They install to the root partition, and make it active, and rely on the default master boot record to boot the active partition. If you select it from the initial boot splash screen on the DVD, then it's wrong. That will just transfer control to the boot loader on the hard drive, there is no difference from not having a DVD at all There is another option though, if you start the installation program, you will get to the point where it asks you what you want to do (install/upgrade/boot installed system). If at that point you select "boot installed system", it will use the kernel from the DVD.
