What happened in previous version was that the GNOME keyring was
unlocked automatically if the users password was the same as the keyring
password. 
This custom patch was lost in 10.2 I think.

Nah, setting it to an empty password is not a good idea. What would be a
much better idea would be to try to install CASA. So when an app is
asking for a GNOME keyring password, CASA will intercept that request
and take care of it (unlocking the keyring by itself) and then hand the
password to the app. I'm not sure if CASA is shipped with 10.2 or not
though.
