What you're saying is that you can run old versions of suse, as long as you 
keep the applications updated manually?

Well, of course you can. It's just a lot more work

And incidentally, if you upgrade everything manually, how much of that 
original suse version is left? Does it make sense to say you're running suse 
7.3 if you've upgraded the kernel to 2.4.21, apache to 2.2 and so on?
