Terry,

If you boot with LILO simply compile the kernel and place it under a unique 
name in the /boot dir. Make a copy of the standard Linux boot section in 
/etc/lilo.conf changing the name of the bootfile to the name you gave the new 
kernel, reinstall LILO and reboot.

I'm not that experienced with GRUB, but it should have the same possibillity.
