Hi Bruce I same issue with ZMD - in fact how it will not run even if I
tell it to.
I am in a similar situation of and upgrade from.

Nothing is gong to fix ZMD  and I have many bug reports in on it  
displaying >nul pointer references
With a bit of luck it will be fixed with 10.3 (not Likely)
ZMD is so intertwined with both the actual service and the RPM packet
manager and lets hope its the package manager with the issue
You could try to rebuilt the RPM package manager
with root access execute

rpm --rebuilddb

 
It takes a while to run and if unsuccessful there is nil output on console
