Is the backend running on the same computer as the frontend? If not you need 
to configure the frontend with the ip address of the backend.

Did you start the backend after configuring it? 
rcmythbackend restart

This is what I use to test to see if it is running
ps -e | grep myth
25643 ?        00:02:16 mythbackend
