I just tried unsuccessfully (several times) to install SUSE 9.3 on my machine. I have a Pentium IV with one internal hard drive and one USB 2 external hard drive. The machine already has Windows XP on the internal hard drive (which still works fine). I accepted the SUSE installers recommended partitioning, which was to create the Linux root and swap partitions on the external hard drive, but put GRUB on the internal drive. The installer loaded normally from the CD1 installation disk and then tried to boot before beginning to load from the CD2 installation disk (which is also normal). GRUB came up and started booting Linux. However, after about a screen full of boot commands, the boot failed because it could not find sda2 (the Linux swap partition on the external hard drive) or sda3 (the Linux root partition on the external hard drive).

This is rather disappointing since, being new to Linux, I just accepted the installer's defaults and suggested configuration.

What now? Any suggestions? Do I just give up and try to install Linux on my internal hard drive, and ignore what the installer is recommending I do?

Thanks.
