Ah. I see. Adobe Reader will open the file, but my "open" script is (indirectly) contingent on the system's ability to recognize a file type and dispatch it (via the usual KDE document type affiliations) to the appropriate application. Sorry for the confusion. I'll let you know how it goes trying the techniques you've pointed me to.
