I am at the wrong point of this discussion, but i am talking with Novell about an issue about IO-Scheduling and i didn't find the OP.
Please try echo cfq > /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler or echo deadline > /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler or echo anticipatory > /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler Maybe there is a problem with the setup of the default scheduler, change "sda" to your device! ;-) If this works you can add "elevator=deadline" or cfq, ... to your kernel boot options in grub.
