Hi,
Opensuse LIVE CD/DVD is excellent at auto-detecting most types of
hardware and can be run on a variety of configurations.
Much the same as Knoppix.
However, if I install opensuse (10.2) to hard disk - the startup
seems to be specific to the hardware configuration at time of
installation. For example, if I were to do a full install to hdd and
made sure that all works fine, then if I were to replace the
motherboard, the hdd would no longer boot - usually due to a
difference in chipsets. Is there a way to install opensuse (10.2) to
hdd so that it does a hardware detect at startup just like in the
LIVE DVD version??
I've never had a problem doing this. I've swapped drives between
computers, and although slow, they will eventually come up. Sometime
during the boot process, the system finds most everything. Once done,
you'll get the found new hardware screen, and you can complete the
process there.
BTW, have you actually done this, or are you just guessing?

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I have indeed done this. For example, I can
make a master hdd (I do a full install of 10.2 with all the software
modules installed and configured just the way I want it for my users) -
with the intention to use it as a master to clone other hdd as/when
needed. The problem is not with switching hdd on the same system but if
you go to another system. For example, if you build a master hdd on a
Gigabyte motherboard, then use that same hdd on a Asus motherboard or
even Dell or HP system it just will not boot at all - you will get your
grub screen but once it starts booting it will die - this is mainly due
to the fact that the different systems use different chipsets. Hence I
was wondering whether it was possible to do a full install with the same
hardware detection code/method as on the LIVE CD/DVD on the installed
hdd (I do realize that it will take a bit longer to boot but i'm willing
to live with that fact). Have you tried to do a full install of 10.x
opensuse and then take the hdd to a completely diff motherborad/chipset
and have it work?? Thanks for your help/advice.
PS: This is ONLY a problem if I change to a diff motherboard or a system
with diff chipsets. If I simply add/remove network cards on the same
system or such it is not a problem.
Rgds. Otto.
