I think it is looking at the jpegs as a text document.
What settings do I need to change back for konqueror to see my jpegs as
photos again, instead of text documents ?

I have similar problem, but with "jpg"
on my 10.1 install, only "jpeg" displays in the internal viewer with
all the exifs infos, so I simply add the *.jpg to the jpeg profile
