it's a very good way, but not all systems allow easy loop mount (even if this
is possible also on windows)
I loop mounted ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, iso9something... applied fsck to
recover badly damaged filesystems... works fine. I haven't yet found a
filesystem type which can not be loopmounted.
I was not thinking of _file_ system, but _operating_ system, namely
windows 98 :-)
using fsck on a loop mounted file system is a very good idea
