Ysgrifennodd Jim Flanagan:
Hi John,

I did what you suggested, and followed the detailed steps at
http://en.opensuse.org/ATI at the same time. I still got the black
screen of death. Went to runlevel 3, watched the splaten and sparken,
did the rpm install, rebooted, black screen of death. At that point
Ctl-Alt-F1 would not get me to a tty. Ctl-Alt-Backspace would not do
anything either. The only way I can access the system at this point is
thru SSH.

Here glxinfo returned "glxinfo: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1: undefined symbol: drmCloseOnce", so it looks as if
something go hosed.

fglrxinfo returned "fglrxinfo: command not found"

glxgears will not run, nor will fgl_glxgears

Not being able to get to a local tty on this machine, I ran "rpm -e
$(rpm -qa | grep fglrx)" thru SSH. I can now get to X, but glxinfo is
still broken.

Not at all sure what to do now. The system is worse off than before. I
did see a note in the opensuse.org/ATI page stating "Note: As of
5/5/2007, the official ATI drivers do not support Xorg version 7.2 and
up (driver version 8.36.5). Could this be an issue?

This can't be this difficult. I can supply logs if you want.

Tks,

Jim F

Silly question probably, but did you do aticonfig --initial after you'd finished the install?
