Thanks Patrick, I was thinking about this, but live distro will not use the proprietary nvidia drivers, which will not help me to investigate if this is a software or hardware problem, or both. Maybe I'll go first with downgrading xorg, then with replacing the hardware. As Matthias said, nvidia drivers may be picky on the hardware, and it may be the problem. Or it may be the xorg changes, and the nvidia drivers. Or it may be because of the xinerama setup I'm using, with one DVI and one VGA monitor ... there are so many variables. I had this setup before wroking, and it started to freeze recently, after the xorg update.
