I wouldn't be surprised if you have run into a 64-bit issue. Do you have a 32-bit version of Firefox loaded with the 32-bit mplayer handy? I'll bet all will work. I almost bought a 64-bit laptop, but chickend out and got a 32-bit one. I've heard too much about 64-bit and end user systems not working as expected.
