I believe the initial bootup image does not have sata-support, or your mb-manufacturer have put sata and ide into the same chip, which then the kernel thinks is a ide.
I had the same thing when I installed 10.2 on an ASUS P5B, I solved it by installing the net-install image and then install from the net-repository.
