Hi Herbet,
Thanks for the reply. I hoped it was going to be a "doh!" moment there.

mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb
mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist

However, you're right to assume I'm a newbie, because I am :(/.  I've
not been able to partition the external disk, but was thinking I had to
mount it first for even that.
