Sure, this is the default way the mail server setup is handled in SLES, it 
integrates nicely with the rest of the system (most things are prepared for 
LDAP authentication).

I really see no need for involving databases which weren't designed for 
authentication. The only reason I can see is if there already is a user 
database available, but even then I would strongly advocate migrating it to 
LDAP
