Sure, would be pretty easy.
And package the script as an RPM to pull in required dependencies (gcc,
make, glibc-devel, ...).

Yes, RPMs should be built as non-root anyway.
And at the end of the script, kdesu or gnomesu to root to do the rpm
- --freshen line.
