I tried each and every choice in that list without success, but believe the key to my problem in determining the origination of the /var/log/messages entries, which is why I asked here, thinking that to be more likely a SUSE configuration problem rather than a Skype software problem. I've posted a few times in the Skype Linux forum threads, but haven't yet to find a reply to anything I wrote there.
Ahh... missed the /var/log/messages part :-) What sound card or device are you using? I have 1.4.0.74 working perfectly using the Logitech USB headset, and with a mic/speakers plugged into my SoundBlaster Live 5.1. (I can switch between them) When you say the mic works locally... do you mean that you can get another application to record from it? (for example, Ekiga or Gizmo)? or something else?
