I get a 404 Not Found from the suggested
http://dl.google.com/linux/rpm/stable/i386 - http://dl.google.com/linux
doesn't seem to exist, which means that the instructions for all the Linux
distros will not work.  That makes me wonder about how well-maintained the
site is ....

It's an RPM-MD (YUM) repo.  You don't go to it with a browser - it's
not a URL you can browse.  Add it as a repo either in YAST as the
instructions tell or in Smart and it will work perfectly.
