I just ran across this thread, because I'm having some problems with the
gtk+ file widget as well. I think it's sad that in the whole thread,
nobody actually discussed the issue you posted :(
I'm in touch with a gtk programmer to try to track it down. AFAIK, this
problem does not exist on all systems, so it would be helpful to
establish exactly what circumstances are necessary for it to occur.
You say it only happens with a gnome session, which is what I run. Do
you mean that it doesn't occur in a KDE session? (not that I know
exactly what difference that makes to the environment that a running
application sees)
You say to open as another user, for example root. Do you see the
problem with any user other than root? If I 'su' and run gedit, I see
the problem you describe. If I 'su - anotheruser' and run gedit, it
works normally.
You say you're running 10.2 but didn't say 32-bit or 64-bit?
Finally, in a message I sent to the list

test C program. I wonder if you'd mind running it to confirm the
symptoms?
