I tried the steps in that bug, with no sound.  Inclusion in the audio
group does have an effect, it turns off the little red x on the KMix icon.

This bug report https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227420 seems
to be the problem.  The 10.3 alpha 6 kernel has been updated to 2.6.22
and it's still not fixed.
