Errors produced by attempt to use device designed for 33 MB/s transfer rate on 66 or 100 MB/s will be registered in /var/log/messages as device failure. Few last messages you can see also in virtual terminal 10 (Ctrl-Alt-F10), or better open console window and run: tail -f /var/log/messages than try to access device. Drop CD in tray and try to read it. BTW, device designed for 33 MB/s and set on 66 MB/s will appear at best as very slow reading CD.
