I thinks this is time to dig into the logs.. The root account I assume
is local, if you cannot login via the Windows Network in the first
instance I would check both ends for authentication problems at the
start of the session.

Not knowing the structure and configuration of your setup cannot suggest
much more, Windows Networking has a nasty habit of leaving broken things
lying around in obscure places, which either go away of their own accord
or hang around causing grief until finally nailed down.
