Help>About: shows that you have the x86_64 version of Firefox installed. x86_64 java plugins are all broken, or rather left totally undeveloped. I don't know why, but even Sun has chosen to ignore this base of users.
My solution was to install the x86 version (see below) and use a 32bit javaplugin--mine is from IBM 1.4.2. My Firefox works as expected, after doing this.
