[opensuse] USB recognition

Strange but with some usb units attached to my 10.2 running computer, some of 
the attachments are readily seen and can be used right away. My usb memory 
stick does not stir any activity but if I use my cardreader with one of the 
slots occupied it give me the well known choices.
What is the cause of this phenomena?
How to get recognition every time?
