Ext3 is very stable, standard, and easy to repair: a good choice for 
root.. Xfs has good tools for imaging a partition for backup, for 
instance. Good for /home. Just look at the available tools:

xfs           xfs_bmap      xfs_copy      xfs_freeze    xfs_info      
xfs_logprint  xfs_ncheck    xfs_repair    xfsinfo       
xfs_admin     xfs_check     xfs_db        xfs_growfs    xfs_io        
xfs_mkfile    xfs_quota     xfs_rtcp
