I think one big way they make the image smaller is the use of busybox.
That alone must account for many MB.

Am I correct in that the build is from sources, not from an installed
OpenSUSE?


The kiwi uses distribution packages, no compiling. That XML file is
the configuration used that tells kiwi what packages need to be
installed in the image.

Still not managed to get the net image to boot, it loads the kernel but then sits waiting for a configuration file, not sure where it is looking for it.
